Beryl Matthews |
Beryl Matthews was born in London but now lives in Hampshire. She grew up in a family of enthusiastic readers, and books have always been a very important part of her life. As a young girl her ambition was to become a professional singer, but lack of funds drove her into an office, where she worked her way up from tea-girl to credit controller. Her hobbies are writing, reading, swimming and golf.

Five minute interview with Beryl Matthews...
Will the printed word endure?
I believe it will. So many people enjoy relaxing in peace and quiet with a good book to read. I don't think anything can replace that pleasure.
Which neswpaper do you read?
The Daily Mail. It has good news coverage and many interesting articles.
Who / what is your biggest influence?
Both my parents were avid readers and it is from them I gained my love of books.
What books are you reading at the moment?
My choice of books is wide, but at the moment I am re-reading A Game of Kings by Dorothy Dunnett.
What books did you read as a child?
Anything historical. Jean Plaidy was one of my favourites.
Which literary character would you most like to meet?
Francis Crawford of Lymond from Dorothy Dunnett's books.
Which authors do you most admire?
Sharon Penman. Dorothy Dunnett. Barbara Erskine. Ian Rankin, to name a few.
Where / when do you do most of your writing?
I write in the afternoon and usually settle down with soft orchestral music playing in the background. I write by hand first as I seem to think better with a pencil in my hand. Then I put it on the computer and edit at the same time. It is a routine that suits me.
