David Hinds-Howell was born in 1916. He was educated at Marlborough College, and obtained a Master of Arts degree in philosophy, politics and economics at Oxford University in 1938. After practising as a barrister, he had a long and distinguished career as director of the Hillcrest School of English (1952-1981) and as a teacher of English at advanced and intermediate level.
