Julia Cresswell has written a number of other reference books, including the Guinness Book of British Place Names (with Fred McDonald) and the Bloomsbury Dictionary of First Names. She has also worked on several large reference works including the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary and the Encarta World English Dictionary.
Educated at Oxford and Reading universities, she holds degrees in Medieval Literature and the History of Language, and Medieval Studies, and has taught Medieval Literature and History of English at various Oxford colleges and at the English branches of major American universities. She is married with a son and lives in Oxford.
