Martin Gayford |
Martin Gayford studied philosophy at Cambridge and art history at the Courtauld Institute. He is the art critic of the Spectator, and contributes regularly to the Daily Telegraph, Modern Painters and Harpers & Queen. He is married, with two children, and lives in Cambridge. His latest book is The Yellow House: Van Gogh, Gauguin, and Nine Turbulent Weeks in Arles.

The artists I know are valuable guides to how to live and how to think.
What books are you reading at the moment?
Istanbul – Memories of a City by Orhan Pamuk.
What books did you read as a child?
Those by AA Milne, Lewis Carroll, CS Lewis were favourites.
Which literary character would you most like to meet?
I think I’d always rather meet the author than the character.
Which authors do you most admire?
Marcel Proust and Stendhal as novelists, Byron as a prose writer, George Orwell as journalist.
Where do you do most of your writing?
In my study, as soon as possible after breakfast.
