Patrick Mahoney was born in Portsmouth in 1927. After leaving school at the age of fourteen he became a messenger boy with Cable and Wireless. He served with the Royal Artillery in Germany during the years 1947 to 1948. In his career as an overseas telegraphist Patrick Mahoney was stationed in Bermuda, Aden, Amman, Jerusalem, Geneva and Ndola. He says he has always held a morbid fascination for the First World War and the war in the Far East.
