For fans of Hornblower, this is compulsory reading, but even if you haven't read the earlier books in the series, this volume is self contained enough for enjoyment on it's own merit. Flying Colours is, perhaps, the most unusual book in the series as it takes place almost entirely on land, starting with Hornblower in a French jail, contemplating a "show trial" and death. The books that follow chart his rise from the rank of captain, and show the effect of fame, success and -finally- riches and marital happiness on his character. However Forester never lets up on the wonderful story telling or historical detail, and it is the mix of character development, story telling and historical detail that mark his novels out as true classics.
