The Quincunx

The Inheritance of John Huffam

» Charles Palliser

Penguin
Paperback : 29 Jun 1995

£16.99

Synopsis

The Quincunx is an epic Dickensian-like mystery novel set in 19th century England, and concerns the varying fortunes of young John Huffam and his mother. A thrilling complex plot is made more intriguing by the unreliable narrator of the book - how much can we believe of what he says? First published in 1989, The Quincunx was a surprise bestseller and began a trend for pastiche Victorian novels. It remains one of the best.

'Love the strange title. Love the strainge(sic) conntent(equally sic). The best book I have ever read!If you like Dickens or Wilkie Collins and have ever found them lacking (just something that is not quite perfect)then this is the author for you. I cannot believe that a single man''s mind can be so convoluted - but it did take him 12 years to write it! Better than Shakespeare, better than anything!! Love you, CP!!'
