Synopsis

I'm trying to concentrate so that I can do my homework (reading) but I simply can't. Something is going on in town. You can hear gunfire from the hills!

This entry in Zlata's diary in April 1992 shows how the war draws relentlessly closer to her home in Sarajevo. When she starts her diary, Zlata tells of her normal, happy life with her family and friends. But soon they are fighting to survive. Zlata's very personal account is a vivid portrait of an innocent child caught up in a terrible war.

Reviewer: another bystander

'i picked this novel out because i had an assignment to do on a non-fiction book and i thought it would be interesting to try this. once i started i just couldn''t put it down. it is so amazing. i read all day long, my teachers told me off for reading in class. i finished before the end of the day, i was stunned. the book made me laugh while i still had tears running down my cheeks. i told my friends about it and they thought the same. after reading it, i straight away started my book review. my teacher really liked it and she told me that it was one of her favourite books too. i want ot thank zlata for sharing her unthinkable experience with us. it has been a joy to read this book although i know that is not it''s purpose.'
