Synopsis
THE MONARCHY HAS BEEN DISMANTLED
When a Republican party wins the General Election, their first act in power is to strip the royal family of their assets and titles and send them to live on a housing estate in the Midlands.
Exchanging Buckingham Palace for a two-bedroomed semi in Hell Close (as the locals dub it), caviar for boiled eggs, servants for a social worker named Trish, the Queen and her family learn what it means to be poor among the great unwashed. But is their breeding sufficient to allow them to rise above their changed circumstance or deep down are they really just like everyone else?

If there was one book that I should take to a desert island or had to choose above all others it would be The Queen and I. I have read it so many times; it is my favourite cheer me up, laugh out loud book. I never tire of it and pass it onto friends so often I have to keep buying it again. The image of the Queen and Harris at the DSS office is priceless. It has made me consider the Royal's with more fondness. I would love to know what dear HRH thinks of it, I have no doubt it sits on a shelf in the royal lav. Sue Townsend is a superb comedy writer, a gift that many do not have. To have lived a life without reading Townsend seems somewhat dismal.
