Synopsis

On his twenty-fifth birthday, Leo Vincey opens the silver casket that his father has left to him. It contains a letter recounting the legend of a white sorceress who rules an African tribe and of his father’s quest to find this remote race. To find out for himself if the story is true, Leo and his companions set sail for Zanzibar. There, he is brought face to face with Ayesha, She-who-must-be-obeyed: dictator, femme fatale, tyrant and beauty. She has been waiting for centuries for the true descendant of Kallikrates, her murdered lover, to arrive, and arrive he does – in an unexpected form. Blending breathtaking adventure with a brooding sense of mystery and menace, She is a story of romance, exploration discovery and heroism that has lost none of its power to enthrall.

'The novel has as many similarities as differences to the 1960’s film (which starred Ursula Andress). It begins in Cambridge and an inheritance which Leo Vincey cannot see until his 25th birthday – a shard from a pot with ancient and more recent inscriptions upon it. After seeing this, Leo, his servant, and adoptive father travel to Africa encountering many dangers before entering the realm of Ayesha – She. The story moves rapidly on, as Ayesha familiarises the travellers with her realm, showing them ancient ruins of her past empire, and ending with the flame that kept Ayesha alive for 2000 years. Ayesha believes Leo Vincey to be her reincarnate lover who she murdered 2000 years previously, and has returned, or so She thinks. Little does Ayesha realise that by re entering the flame it will undo 2000 years of life, until it is too late.'
