Synopsis
Genetic mutation has devastated the world. In the bleak, primitive society that has emerged from its ruins, any sign of deviation is ruthlessly hunted out and destroyed. David lives in fear of discovery, for he is part of a secret group of children who are able to communicate with each other by transferring thought-shapes into each others minds. As they grow older they feel increasingly isolated. Then one of them marries a 'norm' with terrifying consequences.

Never A dull page a great book to read 2 or 3 times

This is a cleverly written book, harshly satirizing society and religion. The meaning behind it is quite clear, "Science and technology is supreme". "Move away from your stiff, undeveloping ways".

This book like many other of Wyndham's books picks a premise that had it's roots in the mid 50's prejudices and extrapolates them to a point. This is no exception.
It deals with one view of a post apocalyptic event and the prejudices that can arise from some genetic difference. As always Wyndham writes a fast paced book that keeps the reader turning the page. Dealing with difficult decisions for the main characters that deal with ethical situations.
This is one of my favourite Wyndham books. And Wyndham is one of my favourite authors.

Critic Review:
'Perfect timing ... gentle, sophisticated, slightly astringent humour ... One of the few authors whose compulsive readability is a compliment to the intelligence' Spectator
