'A Clockwork Orange just one tewentieth century novel fo many covering what was becoming a popular theme- that of delinquent youth, perhaps kickstarted in 1939 by Graham Greene''s "Brighton Rock" and continued by William Golding''s 1954 study of the id, "The Lord of the Flies." Published in 1962, "A Clockwork orange" is perhaps the last major novel on a theme which still feels startlingly relevant and will no doubt produce more classics.
This novel does not take a judgemental view; it is more of a study of free will, taking the view that free will in which the indivual is "bad" is better than being forced into being "good." (The way the state destroys Alex''s capacity for appreciating Beethovan in their process if trying to cahnge his violent nature is particularly noteworthy) What sets this apart from other novels on this theme is Burgess''s use of language, giving Alex and his droogs a vocabulary of their own which the reader gets used to surpridingly quickly. Forging a new type of English to communicate what needs to be said has since become extremely popular in modern literature.
In both its still-relevant themes, then, and its use of language, "A Clockwork Orange" was a novel very much ahead of its time. '

I found this book untterly enthralling and it was one of the best books I have ever read.
The character of Alex is a deep one and one that you are drawn into as the reader, and as Alex's friend. He hs a strange mixture of character charm, wit, violence and childish. It's the charming side that draws us into his character.
I found one of the best parts, was translating the nadsat.
So follow Alex and his three droogs into Alex's doom and destiny.
