''Popular' by Gareth Russell is the first in a brand new series of books for young adults, set in a Belfast high school, sounding VERY much like the one I went to when I was eleven. Because of the very bright cover, I probably wouldn't have picked this book up myself, but my little sister loved it and because of the Belfast setting, I wanted to have a look. This is a book which I thought was going to be predictable and shallow. Basically, I thought it looked like 'Gossip Girl,' only with an Irish twist. Luckily, once you start reading it, 'Popular' is about as similar to 'Gossip Girl' as it is to 'Twilight'! The first reason is that it's very well written and very, very funny. It's much more sophisticated than a lot of books in this genre and it's also very 'guy friendly', as well as obviously being something girls will enjoy too. The second thing I thought was impressive about 'Popular' was its characters. From Meredith, Imogen and Cameron down to the most minor character, each one of them feels like a believable (although sometimes ridiculous) human being. Ultimately, what's best about 'Popular' is how it balances being really funny with being very emotional at other times. 'Popular' is sharp, fast-moving, honest and laugh-out-loud, with a great storyline (best one was the one with Cameron, in my opinion. Loved it!) But that's not to say that 'Popular' has no problems. Deep down, I feel like I SHOULD hate it. Its main message seems to be that it's better to live in a world where being gay gets nothing more than a shrug, but being boring makes you a legitimate target for 800 different types of abuse on a daily basis. Still, like I said, parts of it are actually really moving - other parts are just hilariously vicious. As the first in a new series, 'Popular' is going to get bigger and bigger, I think. I'm looking forward to the sequel already and so is my sister and I thought 'Popular' was one of the funniest books I've read in a long time. Girl or guy, it'll definitely make you laugh. Hard.'
