Reviewer: Jonty H. Campbell

'Never mind the murky plot that gets even muddier halfway through. Simply marvel at the brisk pace, the filmic style, the clean, pared down metaphor, the pointed, sassy dialogue. Smile with astonishment at Chandler''s imitated but rarely bettered use of almost delicious similes. An American Gothic novel. Rewards re-reading and serves as a manual on how to write well. '
