Synopsis

» Bond is back. Devil May Care by Sebastian Faulks.

Bond is back. With a vengeance.

‘There’s something I need your help with. The details are a little hazy at the moment, but I sense that it’s going to be something big. Very big indeed. Have you heard of Dr Julius Gorner?’

It’s a name that will become seared into James Bond’s consciousness. The name of a man who knows no master but his own power-crazed ego, whose wealth is exceeded only by his greed and who will stop at nothing until he has destroyed the very heart of Great Britain.

A savage execution in the desolate outskirts of Paris sets in motion a chain of events designed to lead only to global catastrophe, as a tide of lethal narcotics threatens to engulf Sixties Britain, a British airliner goes missing over Iraq and the thunder of coming war echoes round the Middle East...

Bond finds a willing accomplice in the shape of a glamorous Parisian called Scarlett Papava. He will need all her help in a life-and-death struggle with his most dangerous adversary yet – a man who would dance with the Devil himself.

Critic Review:

"An almost faultless replica of Fleming's Bond, right down to the Arnott supercharger in 007's customised Bentley and the three gold rings on his Morland Specials. With an unnervingly accurate ear for Fleming's bracing dialgue and taut, energetic prose, Faulks has given Bond fans a hugely enjoyable entertainment, expertly paced and cleverly imagined."

"In several ways, Devil May Care marks an improvement on the original Bonds."

"When the author tells you that Bond 'could never feel enthusiastic about croissants', you know that you're in good hands."

"The set-pieces are also first class. There's a tennis match between Bond and his nemesis, Dr. Julian Gorner, which is every bit as good as the celebrated round of golf in Goldfinger.  No slouch when it comes to action sequence, Faulks puts together several gripping pursuits."

"2008 will unquestionably be the year of James Bond."

All Charlie Cumming, reviewing for The Spectator

"This is vintage Bond, in a very real sense."
"A ripping yarn"
Peter Millar, The Times (3 stars)

"This 007 is a Faulks hero"
"If a new Bond there had to be, [Faulks] was the right man for the job."
4 stars, David Sexton, Evening standard

The plot reads as if it’s had a shot of literary Viagra…”
Daily Express

“Faulks has done … an absolutely sterling job. … The pages turn over increasingly quickly. He evokes scenes with deft skill: recreates a time and a world with great brio, and manages it with the block script of Fleming’s journalistic nature…”
The Observer

“Devil May Care is a warm-hearted, superbly crafted pastiche and like all good reproductions has it own unique quality. The depth of Faulks’s research is staggering and relentlessly played back as the precisely judged chapters ease you along. Think of your favourite Bond scene and, if not faithfully reproduced, you will certainly find an echo.”
Sunday Express

“Sound the trumpets and fire a 21-gun salute: Bond is back…. At heart, it is a romp, a beautifully put together page-turner that is destined to be read on many beaches over the summer. Rollicking fun.”
City A.M.

“Devil May Care has been put together about as well as any addition to the Bond oeuvre possibly could be …[Faulks] has carefully added a stylistically appropriate lean-to on to the existing structure.  … It’s all there, without stint, delivered in convincing fashion too, in plain prose.”
Evening Standard

"The pages turn over increasingly quickly; Faulks recreates a time and a world with great brio."
Euan Ferguson, Observer

"And Faulks has done it again… Devil May Care is a warm-hearted and superbly crafted pastiche and like all good reproductions has it's own unique quality."
4 stars - Jeffery Taylor, Sunday Express

"AN AFFECTIONATE TRIBUTE THAT WILL THRILL 007 LOVERS"
"Bond aficionados will be thrilled by [Faulk's] ability to capture the wry tone and suave but vulnerable character of 007 without descending into pastiche."
Metro

"None of the writers who took up the Bond mantle after Fleming's death have done it better."
Metro, Alan Chadwick

"Some phrases… read as if they were directly borrowed from Fleming."
"The book… is a smart and enjoyable act of literary resurrection."
Mark Lawson, The Guardian

‘Move over Harry Potter, the publishing event of this year will be the new James Bond book…There is not much to go on at the moment as the plot is under wraps but suffice to say a hero as attractive as Bond coupled with a writer as popular and accomplished as Faulks is sure to be a winner’
Daily Express

‘the biggest literary thrill of 2008 may well be the return of a tuxedo-clad spy last seen in print in 1966.'
The Observer
