'This is brilliant! Despite being a reference book, it has proved tempting enough for us to read whole sections together. It manages to present a lot of information without being dry - there are plenty of appealing pictures and interesting background information on what people wore or ate or played. The book manages to get across the story of Britain, in chronological order, and is divided into sections that are a good size for younger children. My sons particularly liked the gruesome bits on crime and punishment through the ages, and on schools. I''d forgotten quite a lot of the British history the book covers, and I can see this being very useful for reference while my children are at primary school.'
