Will Young reads Danny the Champion of the World
Puffin audiobooks is thrilled to announce that a new audiobook edition of Danny Champion of the World, read by Will Young, will be published on October 25 2007. "When we started talking to Will Young about this project we were sure we were going to get a great reading," said Jeremy Ettinghausen, Penguin's Digital Publisher. "But when we actually heard him read in the studio and saw his enthusiasm for this book we knew that we were actually going to get something really special. Roald Dahl audiobooks have long been a favourite with children and parents and we're sure that there are many listeners who will now come to them for the first time because of Will's involvement and we are sure they will enjoy it as much as we have."
Dominic Gregory, for the Estate of Roald Dahl said that everyone there was looking forward to hearing the new recording. "Danny Champion of the World has long been many people's favourite title in both print and audio editions and we're thrilled that Will Young is reading this new edition. Hopefully the new reading will bring this book to a whole new audience."
Will Young said that he had enjoyed the experience of reading the audiobook. "This was very different from anything I have done before" he said. "But Danny is such a great book and I had a lot of fun reading it and interpreting the different characters in my way. I just hope that it is as much fun to listen to!"
Danny the Champion of the World is one of ten new audio editions of Roald Dahl's most popular tales publishing this autumn.
MICHAEL ROSEN IS THE CHILDREN'S LAUREATE
"I think poetry for children needs to be saved from the cold dissection table of right and wrong answers and put back into rooms and halls full of wonder, compassion, haunting, laughter, music and rhythm. We need to hear its many voices, many cultures, many sounds. So I'll be trying to find ways of spreading the excitement of poetry as widely as possible whether that be through books, performances, festivals, internet, conferencing or however. This is about wide and diverse participation. Diverse Verse for all!" Michael Rosen
The award winning author and poet Michael Rosen is the fifth Children’s Laureate and the first poet to receive the award. Shami Chakrabarti, Director of Liberty and chair of the selection committee, presenting Michael Rosen with the Children’s Laureate Medal and a bursary of £10,000, said:
"As the mother of a five-year old, it was a particular joy to be involved in the prestigious award of Britain 's Children's Laureate. Michael Rosen was our clear and enthusiastic choice. His gift for capturing the language and imagination of children on and off the page will make him a wonderful champion for the young and their literature."
Michael Rosen, who will be the Children’s Laureate for the next two years (2007-2009), responded:
"I hope that I'll be able to boost all children's reading for pleasure but also to give a special lift to the wonderful diverse world of poetry for children. I see my job as Children’s Laureate being an ambassador for fun with books."
