"My new book is aimed at the same readers as Fast Food Nation: people who are curious about important aspects of society that are being deliberately hidden, who feel the mainstream media isn't telling the real story, who are ready and eager to think for themselves. By examining three major pillars of America's underground economy - marijuana, pornography and the traffic in illegal immigrants - I hope to shed light on the nation that has produced it. Like Fast Food Nation, the new book attempts to look behind the shiny, happy surface of contemporary America. The things that a country tries to hide can ultimately be more revealing than what it proudly displays.
Even though Reefer Madness is set largely in the United States, I think the issues it addresses are extremely relevant to what's happening in Great Britain at the moment. The British debates about cannabis and immigration are driven by similar assumptions. And the contradictions between public morality and private spending on the sex industry seem to transcend national boundaries. Every society has its own undergrounds, black markets, and hidden worlds."
