Explanation of work

I focused on the character of blink, that ‘snap judgement’ that happens during just a few seconds but against a background of lots of potential experiences. I expressed the blink under the unconsciousness through a double-layered cover.

The dark front page represents our environment that needs the right judgement. And the bright yellow background represents potential experiences under the unconsciousness that form the basis of the blink – snap judgement. Die-cut windows on the front page represent a way of blinking in our environment. Also, I gave the invisible building shape on the back page. It gives coherence between the front and back cover.

For the typeface I have chosen Helvetica. Helvetica has a solid character so I thought that it is a good match for the strong moment – blink.

Judges comments

The judges were very impressed by the thought process which had gone into this cover. Every aspect was very well thought through – there was a good over-arching concept, very strong typography and application of the idea. This is a cover that pushes every boundary and is very much the work of a designer rather than an illustrator.

‘A beautiful idea, beautifully and stylishly achieved’ Ali Smith
