Explanation of work

My idea is to use traditional, handmade elements but applying them in a contemporary and experimental way. Tess’s rough life is described and pictured in a beautiful way, I want to capture and illustrate that beauty but with a dark edge to it. Screen-printing offers a texture that I like, as well as great colours. The colours I’ve chosen are earthy yet appealing, and ideally the book would be printed in exactly those colours as in the original print.

‘Skillful and convincing’

‘I think it actually would persuade a 19-year-old to buy this book! It’s like a work by Kara Walker – it looks pretty from a distance, then as you move in, you can see it’s deadly’ Ali Smith
