Explanation of work
My interpretation of Tess of the D’urbervilles focuses on Tess as a thistledown spirit whose tragic fate weighs down upon her whiteness. My cover communicates this through the figures, but also through the environment whish is so symbolic in the novel. Her spirit is echoed in the delicate, drooping tree, and the darkening sky weighs down on her like judgement. By telling this story in a visual language that is not specific to time and place I hope to capture the eternal truth of the story, combining new vision with timeless tales; just as Penguin does.
