Explanation of work

I was inspired by Kerouac’s original On the Road scroll, and my intention was to create the atmosphere of a ‘journey’ through his writing. All of the locations the road takes Sal Paradise through are reflected on the cover of the book, forming a map of his journey. Because the cover becomes the reflection of the content, the place names had to be set in the same way as they are on the pages of the book, so I chose to work with a specific On the Road text (Penguin, 2000). The texture and colour of the paper that the cover is printed on play an important role in my design, because I wanted it to echo the feel of the inside pages. The required information on the cover is placed on a separate strip of orange paper that runs around the book and can be removed when the book is purchased.
