Explanation of work
I started to read On the Road and soon became very aware that Jack Kerouac was influenced and inspired by many people he met and the things he experienced whilst travelling through America. This to me was an important factor in the redesigning of the cover. His love for jazz and poetry were the two main factors I wanted to explore further. He said he wanted to write like jazz musicians played, and this quote inspired me to focus on his writing and musical influences.
I looked at jazz and poetry combined, exploring many directions but focusing mainly on the idea of creating a typographical image that would reflect this idea.
How music is written is where I began to develop the typography. I supported the type with record LP imagery to reflect the idea of music and writing together, two of Jack’s major influences and loves whilst writing this book.
