Explanation of work
I decided quite early on that my theme was going to be based on ‘urban decay’, mainly because the word ‘beat’ (beat generation) means poor, weary or down and out. I thought that it was ironic that the title of the book is On the Road when the car I drew looks anything but road-worthy.
The decisions for the type were also very important. I felt that a ‘drunken style’ of font design was required in order to reflect the overall feel of the book. However, it was also very important for the designs to remain legible to the consumer.
