
1. DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES
The closing date for entries is 5 p.m. on Friday, 17 April 2009.
2. ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible for the 2009 competition, you must be a student on any year of an Art or Design course at HND or degree level. The competition is not open to students on an Art Foundation course.
There can be only one named entrant per entry.
3. ENTRY AND SUBMISSION FORMS
You may download the entry form found on the Downloads page of the website. You will find a total of two forms:

Only one entry form is required per entry (per design).

A separate submission form, fixed to the back of each piece of work, must accompany each submission.

The sender must prepay all shipping costs, insurance, customs duties and handling fees for all entries.

4. DESIGNS
You may not enter more than one design.
5. SUBMISSIONS
You must provide the following submissions for each design entry:
- An A3 board showing full jacket to scale 1:1. This must show front, back and spine. There should be no additional work shown on this board.
- An A3 board demonstrating the development of the thought process from the original research to the final concept.
- A bound photocopy of sketchbook work relating to the brief (no bigger than A3).
- A short, typewritten text (max. 50—100 words only) submitted as a hard-copy printout and also saved as a Word document, explaining the concept for your design, as well as a couple of sentences on which Penguin cover you most admire and why.
All of the above (except the sketchbook) must also be submitted as high-resolution PDFs (or a Word document as appropriate) on a CD. Please label the CD with your first name and surname.
All work must be submitted on A3 lightweight card (except sketchbook and CD) and must be clearly labelled with a submission form. Submission forms must be typed or clearly written in blue or black ink with capital letters.
6. COLLECTION OF WORK
Please note that your work will not be returned to you. You can arrange collection from our offices at 80 Strand, London WC2R ORL by prior arrangement. To arrange collection please email mail@penguindesignaward.co.uk. Any work not collected by 27 June 2009 will be destroyed.
7. CONDITIONS OF ENTRY
1. Closing date for receipt of entries is 5 p.m. on Friday, 17 April 2009.
2. No responsibility can be accepted for incomplete, illegible, lost or damaged entries. Proof of sending is not proof of receipt. Entries via agents or third parties are invalid.
3. The winner will be the one who, in the opinion of the judges, has submitted the design that best fulfils the brief from all entries received and further prizes will be awarded using the same criteria. The prizes are: 1st Prize, a six-week work placement at Penguin and cash prize of £1,000; 2nd Prize, a cash prize of £500; 3rd Prize, a cash prize of £250.
4. The prizes are non-transferable and there is no cash alternative to the 1st Prize. However, if, in the sole discretion of the judges, none of the entries is of a sufficiently high standard to merit the award, no prizes, or only runners-up, may be awarded.
5. The winner will be notified in writing by 15 June 2009. The winner’s details will be made available after that date on this website.
6. Events may occur that render the design competition itself or the awarding of the prize impossible due to reasons beyond the control of Penguin. Penguin may, at its absolute discretion, vary or amend the promotion, and the winner agrees that no liability shall attach itself to Penguin, provided that any prize shall not be of lesser value than the one advertised.
7. The decision of the judges is final and correspondence will be entered into only at the absolute discretion of Penguin.
8. The winners agree to take part in reasonable post-event publicity and to the use of his/her name and photograph in such publicity.
9. All entrants hereby license to Penguin the use of their entry for display on any Penguin-owned website and for display in a physical exhibition. Appropriate credits will be given to each item displayed, but Penguin shall not be under an obligation to hold such exhibitions, or to include every entry if it does. Each entrant warrants to Penguin that his entry is original, and made without the inclusion of material owned by any third party.
10. Entries cannot be returned to entrants.
11. It is a condition of entry that all entrants abide by the rules of the design competition.
