Explanation of work
The Hydra is a multiple-headed creature from Greek mythology. Most of its heads grow back if severed, but one is the master head, and the creature dies if this is destroyed. I found this an appropriate metaphor for the disposable students and their controlling tutor. Also, the heads are serpentine, suggesting betrayal. I avoided using classical imagery, such as pillars and statues, and instead went for a more dynamic image, as I feel this is more fitting to the fast pace of the book.
