Four years ago, I bought a tiny house on the North Devon coast, ostensibly as a writer's retreat. Somehow the words just seemed to flow when I was by the sea - the breathtaking view was an inspiration, and a walk on the beach soon blew away the cobwebs if I was feeling at a loss for what to say next. I escaped as often as I could to capture the next few thousand words.

It seemed only natural that this stunning environment would provide a setting for one of my novels. I often looked down over the little town from my window, and wondered about the lives of its inhabitants, a fascinating mix of long-term dwellers, hopeful newcomers and, of course, holiday makers. Gradually, the plot for
Love on the Rocks emerged, set in the fictional seaside village of Mariscombe with its golden sands, turquoise sea and the treacherous coast. For while Mariscombe seems idyllic, there is danger lurking beneath the surface for residents and visitors alike.

Although it is a departure from my usual rural settings, I am sure readers will enjoy the change of scenery. There are all the usual ingredients, but this time served up with a dollop of ice cream, a smattering of sand and a smidgeon of suntan lotion. And it's something everyone can relate to - after all, most of us have enjoyed a British seaside holiday at some time.

And for those keen to return to the Cotswolds after their sojourn by the sea, I am revisiting the village of Honeycote for my next novel,
A White Wedding. There are wedding bells in the air, but as ever with the Liddiard family and their hot-blooded acquaintances, the course of true love will not run smoothly. Chuck in an unexpected lottery win, a cocktail-sodden hen weekend in Puerto Banus and a phalanx of unwanted wedding guests, and it's anyone's guess who makes it up the aisle.

In the meantime, I really hope you enjoy
Love on the Rocks as much as I enjoyed writing it. Kick off your shoes, stick on your shades - and don't forget to send me a postcard to tell me what you think!
PS. The twist in the tale is that I have lost my retreat as my family decided they liked it so much we are now all living there! Guess I'll have to find another one ...
