The Diary of a Young Girl Anne Frank APP

The Diary of a Young Girl Anne Frank APP
Released in App format 18 October 2012
by Viking & TradeMobile

Monday, 03 September - Viking, Penguin and TradeMobile are honoured to publish The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank in App format for the first time on 18 October 2012. A trailer for the App is available here.

Anne's diary movingly reveals how the eight people living under these extraordinary conditions coped with the daily threat of discovery and death, being cut off from the outside world, petty misunderstandings and the unbearable strain of living like prisoners. The Anne Frank App enables a deeper understanding of Anne's thoughts and experience, bringing readers closer emotionally to the diary.

Venetia Butterfield, Viking Publishing Director: "Seventy years since Anne began her diary, it remains one of the most beloved books of all time. With the support of the Anne Frank Foundation we are honoured to bring her story to readers in such an inspiring and sympathetic way."

Jen Porter, founder of TradeMobile: "It's a privilege for us to have been entrusted with bringing such an important text to life and we hope that readers' experiences of Anne's story are enriched by what they see and hear. At any time, readers can go beyond the words on the page and truly immerse themselves in Anne's world through audio, video, images and animation that is contextually relevant to where they are in the story."

Readers will be able to explore Anne's world, see what it looked like, sounded like and felt like living in hiding and what, in turn, was happening outside the annexe walls. With the touch of a button original manuscript pages of Anne's red checked diary will appear, allowing readers access to Anne's scribbles, sketches and notes. Tap a word and readers will listen to Helena Bonham Carter reading out Anne's diary entries. Tap another word and watch videos of those who secretly helped Anne and her family in the annexe. Original radio broadcasts come up, enabling the reader to experience history alongside Anne. Readers can pause at any point in the diary to explore new material as well as choose to read the diary as a traditional book.

The App technology compliments the gravity of one of the most important texts of the 20th century, placing it thoughtfully and vividly in a historical context. Readers can go beyond the words on the page and truly immerse themselves in Anne's world.

An intimate record of adolescence and heartbreak, courage and inspiration, the Anne Frank App is a remarkable edition of the diary.

The App will include a number of special features:

  • Exclusive access by the Anne Frank Foundation (FONDS) to archive materials and footage, previously unreleased
  • An introduction and Q&A with Buddy Elias, Anne's first cousin
  • 5 'missing pages' discovered by the Anne Frank Foundation
  • Exclusive audio extracts read by Helena Bonham Carter
  • Images of Anne's childhood, family and life before the Annexe
  • Facsimile pages from Anne Frank's diary
  • Specially commissioned new material

The App will also be a key addition to all students learning about the Second World War and Holocaust with discussion questions, key historical points and activities based on App material made available to UK classrooms.

This App has been approved and authorised by the Anne Frank Foundation founded by Anne's father Otto Frank (www.annefrank.ch/).

Anne died in prison in Bergen-Belsen, three months short of her sixteenth birthday and just a few weeks before the concentration camp was liberated.
