PENGUIN PRESS

Allen Lane

In 1967 Penguin's founder started an eponymous hardback imprint under the name of Allen Lane. This now has a dynamic, growing list and publishes accessible and excellent non-fiction books of lasting value. Its authors include: Niall Ferguson, Steven Pinker, Ian Kershaw, Michael Moore, Bill Gates, Peter Hennessy and Eric Schlosser.

Reference

Penguin is one of the best-known names in reference publishing with an astonishingly rich list that extends from Roget's Thesaurus and Pears Cyclopaedia to dictionaries on subjects as diverse as psychology, science, symbols and saints.

Penguin Classics

Over fifty years ago, in January 1946, the Penguin Classics list was launched with E V Rieu's translation of the Odyssey. The series now includes over 800 titles including the best in English, American, European, classical and non-western literature and an extensive list of important philosophy, religion, history, politics, travel and art titles. January 2003 sees the relaunch of the classics list for the first time in eighteen years.

Penguin Modern Classics

January 2000 saw the start of the re-launch of the Twentieth Century Classics list into Modern Classics. The list, now completely re-designed, houses the most remarkable range of modern literature in the English speaking world - from the key British and American writers of the century to the greatest works of translation.

PENGUIN GENERAL BOOKS

Penguin Paperbacks

The first ten paperback Penguin books appeared in 1935 costing 6d each (the price of a packet of cigarettes). Since then the Penguin list has developed enormously, but still aims to bring the best writing to the widest possible audience. Penguins now range from Booker-prize winning contemporary authors, to mass market bestsellers, with successful history, biography and general non-fiction as well.

Hamish Hamilton

Founded in 1931, Hamish Hamilton is one of Britain's most distinguished literary lists. Now an integral part of Penguin, it provides a home for an exciting and eclectic group of authors, united by the distinctiveness and excellence of their writing. Publishing no more than twenty new titles a year, both fiction and non-fiction, authors include Alain de Botton, William Boyd, Esther Freud, Toby Litt, Redmond O'Hanlon, W.G. Sebald, Zadie Smith, William Sutcliffe, Paul Theroux and John Updike.

Michael Joseph

Michael Joseph publishes market focussed popular fiction and non-fiction. The fiction list includes thrillers, crime, contemporary women's reads, romance and humour. The non-fiction list embraces celebrity autobiography, showbiz, current affairs, popular history, comedy, sport, cookery, self-help and mind/body/spirit. Principally interested in Top Ten bestsellers, authors include: Tom Clancy, Clive Cussler, Nicci French, Jane Green, Graham Hancock, Lisa Jewell, Felicity Kendal, Marian Keyes, Jamie Oliver, Jeremy Paxman, Lesley Pearse, Robyn Sisman, Sue Townsend and many more.

Viking

Viking publishes the widest possible range of literary fiction and non-fiction. The fiction range spans from the highly literary and sometimes experimental (Saul Bellow, Anita Brookner, Jim Crace, Helen Dunmore) to the more commercial (Nick Hornby, John Mortimer, Barbara Vine). In non-fiction, the range covers current affairs, history (Antony Beevor), biography (Sarah Bradford, Claire Tomalin), belles lettres, travel and sport.

PENGUIN AUDIOBOOKS

The publishing list of Penguin Audiobooks reflects the diversity of the Penguin book range, including classic and contemporary fiction and non fiction, autobiography, poetry, drama and, through our Puffin Audiobooks imprint, the best of contemporary and classic literature for younger listeners. In addition to our book-related activities, we are proud to have published comedies such as Men Behaving Badly, Victoria Wood, Birds of a Feather and Ben Elton and to have led the way in promoting audiobooks on CD, to offer spoken word to as wide an audience as possible.

PUFFIN

Puffin is the UK's leading publisher of children's books and one of its best-loved brands. Puffin also has strong relationships with many other leading media companies, including Disney and Dreamworks.

WARNE

Frederick Warne was founded and eponymously named in 1865 by an entrepreneurial bookseller. Originally specialising in illustrated books, it remained a family-run firm right up until 1983, when it was acquired by Penguin Books.

Warne's best-known author was Beatrix Potter, creator of the world-famous Peter Rabbit Books. Since its acquisition by Penguin, Warne has focused on the development of Beatrix Potter and other book-based children's character properties; it now manages an international programme of publishing, licensing and entertainment.

Eric Hill's much loved Spot; Ladybird picture books (who celebrated 20 years of fun in 2000); Cicely Mary Barker's Flower Fairies, first published in 1923; Kathleen Hale's Orlando the Marmalade Cat and the charming nursery illustrations of Dutch artist Henriette Willebeek le Mair make up the rest of the current portfolio.
