Zadie Smith wins Guardian First Book Award
Last night Zadie Smith was declared the winner of the Guardian
First Book Award for her novel White Teeth. Julian Barnes, one of
the judges, said, "The book gave me a burn of envy as a fiction
writer." On receiving the award, Zadie Smith said, "It's the prize
I really wanted to win. The Guardian is a very lucky prize because
it's not restricted by nation race or gender. It's incredibly wide."
