Kitchen comforts

I love my kitchen. When we moved in, we added a new corner with a glass roof. It brings so much light into the house.

When I am in the kitchen, I find it immensely satisfying to have a clean work surface, a very sharp knife and a pile of vegetables to make soup with, or Sunday lunch. When the children were little we never made Sunday lunch because it seemed to take up the whole day, but now there's nothing nicer than ringing around to see who’s free.

'The gravy is always mine'

It is lovely to make roast potatoes and especially the gravy – I'm a bit of a perfectionist about making gravy. I'm more than happy for other people to do anything else, but the gravy is always mine because I'm very good at it; no one dares say I'm not!

The spice rack you can see was a wedding present, so it's very old! I do like adding spice to food and I love chilli oil. Salads are my thing really but I recently made the most amazing gazpacho. I was trying to recreate one I had in a restaurant, but mine wasn’t as good as theirs!

Finally, you can't see it, but on one wall is a clock that I inherited from my uncle. It is an old station clock and ticks so loudly that people hear it on the telephone.
