What I’m reading: Cash Carraway

Having cast aside her smartphone, the playwright and Skint Estate author loves to dip in and out of books on the go. From modern classics such as Norman Mailer to a debut from the Suede bassist, here’s what’s been in her bag lately.

Stuart Simpson / Penguin Books

Playwright, author and spoken word artist Cash Carraway attended the famous Brit School before studying English at university, after which she began her writing career. She gained commissions for the Old Vic and Soho Theatre, eventually winning awards for her one-woman, spoken-word show.

Her debut, Skint Estate, was an unflinching memoir of Cash’s experience of poverty incuding time spent in police cells and women’s refuges, which also launched a scathing attack on austerity Britain. Now developing her story for TV, Cash tells us about the books that have inspired her recently.

Skint Estate by Cash Carraway is out on paperback now.
