Event: The Light We Carry self-care Sunday festival

An all-day festival inspired by Michelle Obama’s new book will take place on 27 November

On Sunday 27th November, an all-day festival inspired by Michelle Obama’s new book, The Light We Carry, will take place between 12pm and 6pm at Waterstones, 203-206, Piccadilly, London.

Penguin, in partnership with Dark Matter, a specialist marketing agency focused on reaching Black audiences, and Black Ballad, the UK media platform aimed at Black women, will take over the mezzanine floor at Waterstones Piccadilly for a series of activities and events, celebrating the themes of The Light We Carry.

The day’s programme of activities will include: a floristry workshop, with award-winning florist Shirley Blossoms, to create a bouquet featuring Michelle Obama’s favourite flowers; a book club session on The Light We Carry, hosted by Content Between the Covers; a writing workshop hosted by Black Ballad; kids’ craft activities with Woke Babies, and a pop-up brow bar with Nails & Brows Mayfair founder and beauty expert Sherrille Riley. Afrocenchix will be on hand all day with winter haircare recommendations and a pop-up shop. A podcast recording with Your Aunties Could Never will take place in front of a live audience in the mezzanine café and music will be provided by a live set from DJ Venus Flytraxx.

All activities are free and places will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

At 4pm, activities move to Level 3 of Waterstones, where Black Ballad’s Head of Editorial, Jendella Benson, will lead a panel discussion on: Looking to the year ahead with hope and resilience. The panel will consist of Dawn Butler, MP for Brent Central; Olympic medallist, Anyika Onuora; and Kai Collective founder, Fisayo Longe.
