With Royal wedding bells chiming, we thought it was the perfect time to revisit our favourite fictional weddings with these books full of romance, family drama and the occasional unexpected twist...
If you love the intricacies of wedding planning - the baking, the sewing, the organising - then this is your dream book! Sarah is a wedding planner who, a little inconveniently, doesn't actually believe in true love. Similarly her best friend Elsa, a dress-maker, and hairdresser friend Bron are single, and wholeheartedly up to the challenge of helping her plan two difficult weddings falling on the same day. But it wouldn't be Katie Fforde without a little extra romance along the way...even if the characters aren't in search of it.
This is a real page-turner of a book, set over the course of one weekend where many wedding guests are staying at the same hotel. But all of them have secrets, or at least, something they want to hide... With brilliantly written characters and gasp-inducing twists, each chapter is set over the course of another hour at the wedding as the story unravels. It's dark, it's dramatic and it's terribly entertaining.
This sparkling romantic comedy features an endearing heroine and irresistable stranger - the perfect match for a light-hearted read. Annie is a single mum, divorced, and soon to be married again at the end of the summer. With plans to finish her novel and settle some last-minute wedding plans, she escapes to a house on the coast, when her peace is gatecrashed by some unexpected house guests. Suddenly her wedding day seems a long way away, indeed...if it's destined to happen at all.
Warm and hilarious, this book plays out the daydream of marrying someone famous and all the glamour that goes with it. Kelly Monsoon is a 'nobody' who falls in love with Hollywood star Rufus, and finds herself sucked into a world she knows nothing about as she plans a wedding quite different from the small, intimate affair she'd always pictured. Funny, light-hearted and with a big twist you won't see coming, it's an escapist read you'll devour in no time.
You may have seen the film starring Debra Messing and Dermot Mulroney, and we promise the book is just as brilliant (if not a little different, plot-wise)! Sophie's quite happy to be single, but she tells a white lie and invents a boyfriend to keep her mother off her back. Which isn't a problem, until he's expected to attend a family wedding, of course... To cover her tracks, Sophie hires an escort, and many laughs, awkward moments and romantic drama ensues! It's just an all-round lovely read, perfect if you're in need of a pick-me-up.
Love, commitment and cake aside, weddings are also great for a bit of family drama, which is certainly what you're in for with this emotional book by Danielle Steel. Allegra has been unlucky in love. Her parents are a famous Hollywood couple, and she herself is a high-flying lawyer with little time for relationships. That is, until she meets Jeff, falls head over heels and begins to plan the wedding of the century. Bring on the chaos, anxiety and revelations, as the preparations bring out the best and worst in everybody. Is all really fair in love and war?
It's 1944 and Britain is at war. Maggie is getting married, so spends every day slaving on the factory floor, aiming for her big day. Julia would rather be at university, and isn't sure how she fits in with the others at the factory. But in spite of the difficult times, these women are giving everything they've got to the cause. This is an uplifting read with a resounding message about what weddings are all about - true love and commitment.
