In June 2020, award-winning British-Turkish novelist, Elif Shafak, joined writer, journalist and broadcaster, Afua Hirsch to discuss inequality and what we can do to address and challenge it.

The following activities give KS3-5 students the opportunity to discuss how and why the coronavirus pandemic has affected existing inequalities in society, how young people can address inequality, and whether our current education system and curriculum addresses inequality. The following activities can be used as standalone activities, or used together with the starter and plenary to form a complete lesson (approx. 1 hour 30 mins in total).

  1. Why has the pandemic had a bigger impact on certain groups of people?

  2. How can I challenge inequality?

  3. Does our education system address inequality?

Activity one

Elif Shafak and Afua Hirsch discuss how the coronavirus pandemic has had a more negative impact on women, people from an ethnic minority, and poorer communities.

Activity two

Elif Shafak and Afua Hirsch discuss what individuals can do to challenge inequality, and young people in particular.

Activity three

Elif Shafak and Afua Hirsch discuss their thoughts on the curriculum and inequality.
