When and where is the WriteNow 2021 workshop?

This year's workshop will take place on Saturday 4 September, from 10am - 2pm. It will take place online.

Who is the event for?

This event is for all writers who applied to WriteNow 2021 earlier this year.

How do I join the event?

The panels will be delivered through Zoom webinar.  A couple days before the event, you will be emailed a personal link to access the Zoom webinar. Please do not share this link with anyone else, as this is a closed event for WriteNow applicants.

If you get a pop-up when you click on the link, then select ‘open zoom.us’. If this doesn’t appear then there will be highlighted text that says ‘launch meeting’ on the main Zoom landing page.

Please remember to enter your name and the email address you registered with so we can let you into the event.

Do I need a Zoom account to be able to attend?

You don't need to have a Zoom account to be able to attend the conference, but you will be asked to enter your email address and name.

Please remember to enter your name and the email address you registered with so we can let you into the event.

Will people be able to see or hear me?

Your video or audio will not be on at any point throughout the event.

You will be encouraged to use the Chat and Q&A functions to ask questions. If you wish to submit a question or use the chat function, your name will appear on the post, unless you choose to submit an anonymous question.

Which devices work best?

We recommend connecting to the event on either a laptop or PC. Whilst tablets and phones work well, the viewing experience is better when using a laptop or PC.

Depending on your device there are different view settings, these are often active speaker or side by side. When a presentation is shared there should be the option at the top of your screen to ‘view options’ this will allow you to select ‘side-by-side mode’.

iPhones and tablets have different settings so we advise taking a little time to familiarise yourself with your device settings.

Please don’t worry if you do not have a strong internet signal – we will be recording all the sessions so that you don’t miss out.

How do I ask questions throughout the day?

You will not be able to switch on video and audio throughout the event, but you can use the Chat and Q&A functions to ask interact with other attendees and put questions to the panels.

There are two functions that will be available for you:

  • Q&A Function – the Q&A box will appear in the black ribbon (normally at the top or bottom) of your screen. Please use this function during each panel to submit any questions you may have for the presenter(s). Your name will be visible when you ask questions, unless you choose to submit anonymously.
  • Chat Function – as with the Q&A function, you can find Chat in the black ribbon of your screen.

Please note that the chat function will not be monitored for questions to the presenters during the webinars, so make sure to use the Q&A function for this.  Remember not to share your email address or contact information on here.

Will the event be recorded?

The talk will be recorded and made available after the event to attendees, but your name and video will not be visible.

Will the event be live-captioned?

Closed captioning (i.e. subtitles) will be active during the event. To switch on closed captioning you should see the ‘CC’ icon in the Zoom Toolbar (usually at the bottom of your screen). Click on this and it should allow you to select ‘show subtitles’. This will switch on the closed captioning for you. If you need to change any of the settings to make the text bigger etc. then you can click on the ‘CC’ Icon and you should be able to select ‘subtitle settings’ where there will be number of options available to you.

If I'm no longer able to attend, what do I do?

If you are no longer able to attend, please let us know as soon as you can by emailing writenow@penguinrandomhouse.co.uk

Don’t worry if you can no longer attend as all of the talks will be recorded and made available to attendees after the event.
