Richard Cable

Managing Director, Vintage

I have been fortunate to work in a number of different publishing roles during my career. My position as Managing Director of Vintage allows me a view of the entire creative environment in which my team work. And it is a real privilege: to be one of the first readers of a great new novel from an established name or from a newcomer; to witness the creative process as one of our designers produces the perfect design; or to marvel at an inventive marketing and publicity campaign that really connects with readers. All of these moments are elements of what we do every day and every week, working hand in hand with our authors.

And if I hadn’t worked in publishing?  I would have loved to have been involved in some way with the music business, ideally as a musician!

A book that's left a deep impression on me: There have been so many, but recently I have finally got around to reading David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas and was completely blown away by it.

My literary hero: Academic Tony Tanner whose City of Words introduced me to the works of the great American post-war novelists.

A book I'd recommend to everyone: I regularly recommend Lawrence Osborne’s novels to friends and colleagues and there’s nowhere better to start enjoying his work than with The Forgiven.
