The Next Editors Programme is an 18-month traineeship, designed to help you learn and develop the skills needed to excel in the book industry as a Commissioning Editor.
You’ll get exposure to the full publishing landscape and understand how we take books from ideas to readers. You’ll also get a crash course in the business element of books, seeing how we pitch for the authors we believe in, how we acquire and how we use our expertise to make that book a success.
Alongside on-the job learning and guidance from an experienced manager, you'll also be supported by our HR team and follow a bespoke training and development programme designed to fast track your knowledge and skills to put you in the strongest position to carry on your career as a Commissioning Editor at the end of the programme.
In the first phase of your training, you'll be immersed in the publishing industry - learning how we publish a book, building your commercial awareness, and getting to know the different elements that come together to make that happen - from authors, marketing and publicity, to retailers.
You'll then build on that knowledge through a structured training programme, designed to equip you with the practical tools you need to become a great Commissioning Editor. You'll learn how to pitch, acquire, and promote a book and build your core editing skills.
The final phase will have you putting all that you’ve learnt into practice and taking ownership of your own projects, authors and commissions.
