What we’re looking for

Commissioning Editors are at the heart of publishing. They are:

Entrepreneurs, Acquirers, Packagers, Influencers, Editors Icons

If you’ve shown these qualities in your career so far, then you’ve the potential to become a Commissioning Editor.

You don’t need publishing knowledge: we’re interested in what you can bring from your career so far, and the skills and experience you’ve developed, whether that’s managing projects, writing online or working with customers in sales.

Entrepreneur

Entrepreneurs spark creative ideas and take the initiative, translating ideas from concept to reality.

You’ll demonstrate this by showing you have proven experience of:

 • Using your initiative to take an idea or project and make it happen

 • Overcoming obstacles and setbacks by flexing and adapting to the situation

 • Embracing opportunities and seeking out feedback to keep learning and apply the next time

Acquirer

Acquirers are boundlessly curious with an appetite for looking outward and seeking out ideas, stories, voices and perspectives whether that’s on screen, in books or on social media.

You’ll demonstrate this by showing you have proven experience of:

 •  Engaging widely with different forms of media and storytelling

 •  Using insights such as trends or data to guide your decision making

 •  Spotting an exciting opportunity, using your commercial rigour to consider how it could make an impact

Packager

Packagers understand the importance of narrativevisual impact and audience when getting their ideas across.

You’ll demonstrate this by showing you have proven experience of:

 •  Exploring many viewpoints and have used those insights to improve your work.

 •  Considering the context and audience and use it to inform the way you package up and communicate your ideas.

 •  Conveying ideas concisely and effectively to grab an audience’s attention.

Influencer

Influencers are strong communicators and are confident at building and maintaining relationships.

You’ll demonstrate this by showing you have proven experience of:

•  Building strong connections with those around you, bringing them on board with your ideas.

•  Understanding other perspectives, using your emotional intelligence to consider what will be important to them

•  Working successfully in a team by building trust and instilling confidence.

Editor

Bringing all of these qualities together, the skill of an Editor is the ability to lead the project of publishing a book - from start to finish. Editors care about getting it right and work with the author to make it happen.

You’ll demonstrate this by showing you have proven experience of:

 •  Caring about the detail, big and small.

 •  Managing projects and balancing multiple priorities, taking responsibility for their progress and delivery.

You’re not just a fan of books; you want to help tell the stories that need to be told. You’re interested in the business of books and have thoughts on how to make Penguin Random House thrive commercially as well as creatively.

If you’ve demonstrated these skills and built this experience in your career so far, then we think you’ve got the potential to make a great Commissioning Editor... apply and you could be next.
