The Penguin Companion to European Union

Anthony Teasdale (and others)

The bestselling Penguin Companion to European Union explains the ideas, institutions, personalities and policies that have shaped politics at European level since the Second World War. Its interlocking A to Z entries provide clear, definitive and accessible accounts of the history, role, powers and decision-making processes of the European Union - and other international organizations, such the Council of Europe and NATO - as well as the national and international political contexts in which they operate.

In this completely new fourth edition, Anthony Teasdale has updated the whole text and added a series of entries on key developments in recent years - including the drafting and aborted ratification of the European Constitution, the new power balance defined by the Lisbon Treaty, and the politics and economics of the eurozone debt crisis.

Churchill's Wit

Richard M. Langworth

Charismatic, erudite and often controversial Winton Churchill was one of the most inspiring leaders of the 20th century, and one of its greatest wits. His much-celebrated sense of fun and mischief has led to many of his jokes and ripostes becoming almost as well known as his famous wartime speeches. Gloriously definitive, Richard Langworth includes all Churchill's most famous quips and witticisms, as well as little known asides and observations. The only book of its kind to be sanctioned by the Churchill estate, it captures the great statesman at his most eloquent, witty, and engaging, Churchill's Wit celebrates the humour and humanity of this most imposing man.

'My dear young man, thought is the most dangerous process known to man.'

'I believe I am the only man in the world to have received the head of a nation naked.'

'[A politician] is asked to stand, he wants to sit and he is expected to lie.'

'-Winston, you are drunk, and what's more you are disgustingly drunk.
-Bessie, my dear, you are ugly, and what's more, you are disgustingly ugly. But tomorrow I shall be sober and you will still be disgustingly ugly.'

Orientalism

Edward W. Said

For generations now, Edward W. Said's Orientalism has defined our understanding of colonialism and empire, and this Penguin Modern Classics edition contains a preface written by Said shortly before his death in 2003.

In this highly-acclaimed work, Edward Said surveys the history and nature of Western attitudes towards the East, considering orientalism as a powerful European ideological creation - a way for writers, philosophers and colonial administrators to deal with the 'otherness' of eastern culture, customs and beliefs. He traces this view through the writings of Homer, Nerval and Flaubert, Disraeli and Kipling, whose imaginative depictions have greatly contributed to the West's romantic and exotic picture of the Orient. Drawing on his own experiences as an Arab Palestinian living in the West, Said examines how these ideas can be a reflection of European imperialism and racism.

Edward W. Said (1935-2003) was a Palestinian-American cultural critic and author, born in Jerusalem and educated in Egypt and the United States. His other books include The Question of Palestine, Culture and Imperialism and Out of Place: A Memoir.

If you enjoyed Orientalism, you might like Frantz Fanon's The Wretched of the Earth, also available in Penguin Modern Classics.

Gut Feelings

Gerd Gigerenzer

In Gut Feelings: Short Cuts to Better Decision Making psychologist and behavioural expert Gerd Gigerenzer reveals the secrets of fast and effective decision-making.

A sportsman can catch a ball without calculating its speed or distance. A group of amateurs beat the experts at playing the stock market. A man falls for the right woman even though she's 'wrong' on paper. All these people succeeded by trusting their instincts - but how does it work?

As Gerd Gigerenzer explains, in an uncertain world, sometimes we have to ignore too much information and rely on our brain's 'short cut', or heuristic. By explaining how intuition works and analyzing the techniques that people use to make good decisions - whether it's in personnel selection or heart surgery - Gigerenzer will show you the hidden intelligence of the unconscious mind.

'Fascinating and provocative ... Gut Feelings may well be the recipe for a simpler, less stressful life'<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;Sunday Times

'Gigerenzer's writing is catchily optimistic and slyly funny ... Devilish'<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;Steven Poole, Guardian

'The science behind the phenomenon cited in the bestseller Blink ... useful and clearly written'<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;Business Week

'Gigerenzer is brilliant'<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;Stephen Pinker

Gerd Gigerenzer is Director of the Center for Adaptive Behavior and Cognition at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin and former Professor of Psychology at the University of Chicago. He has published two academic books on heuristics, Simple Heuristics That Make Us Smart and Bounded Rationality: The Adaptive Toolbox as well as a popular science book, Reckoning with Risk.
