A. J. Liebling, born in Manhattan in 1904, joined the staff of the New Yorker in 1935 and contributed innumerable articles to the magazine throughout his lifetime, on subjects ranging from food to boxing and France to horse racing. As a war correspondent during the Second World War, he reported from France, England and Algeria, and participated in the Normandy landings. In later life he married the writer Jean Stafford, his third wife. He died in 1963.

He arrived in the UK in 1904 to study law. In 1907, he organised a centenary commemoration of the abolition of the slave trade in Westminster Abbey. Historians of the Second World War have hitherto omitted to mention that the first British raid on German-occupied France took place within four months of Dunkirk. It happened at midnight on September 21st, 1940, the landing being made at the small fishing town of Granville, in Normandy. We see Frankenstein's developing obsession with, and fear of, death, his fascination with the writings of the medieval alchemists, his study of the medical uses of electricity in Bavaria, and his work with the bodysnatching doctors of 18th century Glasgow. Rosie's Frankenstein is a man of his time, the range of his scientific interests bears comparison with a Faraday; his appetite for women with a Boswell. A wonderful tour de force that wears its learning with a delightful lightness, this is one of the most engaging historical novels for a long time.
