Where Dead Voices Gather

Nick Tosches (Author)

Only Nick Tosches, best-selling author of Dino and The Devil and Sonny Liston, could have woven this irresistible tale: part mystery, part biography, part meditation on the meaning and power of music.

A forgotten singer from the early days of jazz is at the centre of this riveting narrative. For twenty years, Nick Tosches searched for facts about the life of Emmett Miller, a yodelling blackface performer whose songs prefigured jazz, country, blues and much of the popular music of the twentieth century. Beginning with a handful of 78-rpm records and ending at a tombstone in a Macon, Georgia, graveyard, Tosches pieces together a life - and illuminates the spirit of music makers from Cab Calloway to Bob Dylan, from Homer to the Rolling Stones.

This is a brilliant, inspired journey by one of the most original writers at work today.

Proper Healthy Food

Nick Knowles (Author)

In 2015 Nick Knowles felt overweight, unhealthy and was feeling every one of his 53 years. He travelled to Thailand for a retreat and after fasting for a week, and then adopting a purely vegan diet, Nick returned a changed man.

Now slimmer, healthier, and eating a vegan or vegetarian diet (with the odd day off), Nick wants to share what he has learned with everyone else who wants to look and feel better, but isn't sure if the vegan/vegetarian lifestyle is for them. As Nick says: I'm 6' 2" and 16 stone - I need hearty meals not thin weedy plates and I often work outside in cold and wet conditions - a salad won't cut it - so here's a vegan and vegetarian cookbook for meat eaters full of hearty filling healthy recipes.

Why feel bad about the cake you have with your coffee at elevenses when you can have a healthy raw chocolate cake with your coffee? There's posh meals to impress, puds to make your loved one swoon and surprisingly yummy options that are easy to throw together with ingredients we can all get hold of. Why skimp in winter when you can have a thick hearty chestnut and vegetable stew and dumplings. Or Vegan shepherds pie, a proper chunky vegan burger and lots of veggie options too. And if I can do it - then you can do it.

Love Goes to Buildings on Fire

Will Hermes (Author)

Love Goes to Buildings on Fire by Will Hermes - Five Years in New York that Changed Music Forever

'A must-read for any music fan' (Boston Globe)

Crime was everywhere, the government was broke and the city's infrastructure was collapsing, but between 1974 and 1978 virtually all forms of music were being recreated in New York City: disco and salsa, the loft jazz scene and the Minimalist classical composers, hip hop and punk.

Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith arrived from New Jersey; Grandmaster Flash transformed the turntable into a musical instrument; Steve Reich and Philip Glass shared an apartment as they experimented with composition; the New York Dolls and Talking Heads blew away the grungy clubs; Weather Report and Herbie Hancock created jazz-rock; and Bob Dylan returned with Blood on the Tracks.

Recommended by Nick Hornby, this fascinating and hugely inspiring book will be loved by readers of Just Kids by Patti Smith, Chronicles by Bob Dylan, How Music Works by David Byrne and The Rest is Noise by Alex Ross.

'Can literature change your life? Yes ... along came Will Hermes, who cost me several hundred pounds on iTunes and ruptured my relationship with guitars' Nick Hornby, Believer magazine

Will Hermes was born in Queens, in the city of which he writes. He is a senior critic for Rolling Stone, and also writes for the New York Times and the Village Voice. He was co-editor of SPIN: 20 Years of Alternative Music.

Nick Cave (Author)

And the Ass Saw the Angel - Nick Cave's classic Gothic novel, in its full and original form

Outcast, mute, a lone twin cut from a drunk mother in a shack full of junk, Euchrid Eucrow of Ukulore inhabits a nightmarish Southern valley of preachers and prophets, incest and ignorance. When the God-fearing folk of the town declare a foundling child to be chosen by the Almighty, Euchrid is disturbed. He sees her very differently, and his conviction, and increasing isolation and insanity, may have terrible consequences for them both...

In 2009 Cave released a cut-down version of his novel but this reissue restores the full uncut text, as first published in 1989.

Compelling and astonishing in its baroque richness, Nick Cave's acclaimed first novel is a fantastic journey into the twisted world of Deep Southern Gothic tragedy. This book will be adored by readers of Will Self, William Faulkner and Falnnery O'Connor, as well as fans of the cult rock star everywhere.

A no-holds-barred look into the remarkable life and career of the prolific musician, songwriter, and producer behind Eurythmics and dozens of pop hits.

For the first time, Stewart shares the incredible, high-octane stories of his life in music-the drug-fueled adventures, the A-list collaborations and relationships, and the creative process that brought us blockbusters from Eurythmics like " Here Comes the Rain Again" and "Would I Lie to You" as well as Tom Petty's "Don't Come Around Here No More," No Doubt's "Underneath It All," Golden Globe winner "Old Habits Die Hard" with Mick Jagger, and many more.

From great friendships and creative partnerships including the group SuperHeavy along with Jagger, Joss Stone, Damian Marley, and A. R. Rahman, to inspired performances and intimate moments in the studio-Stewart highlights the musicians he admires and calls friends, from Bob Dylan, Stevie Nicks, Elton John, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr to Bono, Bon Jovi, and Katy Perry.
