The Vintage Podcast: The importance of poetry

In celebration of National Poetry Day, Alex Clark talks to two of our favourite poets and we hear some of their poetry read aloud...

the importance of poetry

Poetry should be heard as often as it is read so, to honour National Poetry Day, the Vintage Podcast talks to the poets behind two of Cape Poetry's most exciting new collections.

Ocean Voung's collection Night Sky with Exit Wounds recently was awarded the Forward Prize for Best First Collection 2017. He discusses writing about war, cultural upheaval and wielding a fresh new language at the ancient art of poetry.

Kayo Chingonyi 's Kumukanda, translating as ‘initiation’, is titled after the name given to the rites a young boy from the Luvale tribe must pass through before he is considered a man. Alex Clark talks to Chingonyi about writing race, identity and masculinity into his work.

In the second half of our poetry special we meet Michael Symmonds Roberts, whose half-real and half-imagined-utopian Manchester is chronicled in his new disturbing and shape-shifting collection, Mancunia.
