Everything you need to know:

1. Rising star Florence Pugh (King Lear, Lady Macbeth) will be joining Big Little Lies star Alexander Skarsgård in a stellar cast including Academy Award nominee Michael Shannon and Game of Thrones star Charles Dance.

2. The six-part series is a TV debut for acclaimed director Park Chan-wook, best-known for his multi-award-winning films Oldboy, Thirst and most recently, The Handmaiden. He has praised Skarsgård’s casting: ‘To play an enigmatic man who hides his true feelings inside, I couldn’t think of a more fitting actor’.

3. The production is from the team behind The Night Manager and we should expect more sun, suspense, deception and danger in this adaptation, based on le Carré’s 1983 novel.

4. Pugh stars as young actress Charlie who finds herself involved with an intriguing stranger while holidaying in Greece in the 1970s. It soon becomes apparent that his intentions are far from romantic and she ends up embroiled in a high-stakes plot – orchestrated by spymaster Kurtz (Michael Shannon).

5. While no official date has been set for the launch of the series, it will be on AMC in the US and BBC One in the UK this autumn.

6. The Little Drummer Girl will be available in Penguin Modern Classics from this September.
