Miss Cackle’s Academy for Witches looks more like a prison than a school, with its gloomy grey walls and turrets. Everything about it is dark and shadowy. Even the girls themselves are dressed in black gymslips, black stockings, black hob-nailed boots and grey shirts!
But within these walls are three of the best friends you are ever likely to meet:
Mildred Hubble - our hero Mildred is disaster-prone, and positively the worst witch at Miss Cackle’s Academy.
Maud Spellbody - sensible and loyal, Mildred would be lost without her.
Enid Nightshade - mischievous and fun, Mildred and Maud love being in Enid’s company!
Then there’s Mildred’s arch-enemy:
Ethel Hallow – snooty know-it-all Ethel always tries to get Mildred into trouble.
Drusilla Paddock – Ethel’s long-suffering sidekick.
And of course, the teachers:
Miss Cackle – the kindly headmistress.
Miss Hardbroom – the most terrifying form mistress in the school.
Miss Bat – the chanting mistress.
Miss Drill – the gym mistress.
Miss Mould – the art mistress.
Last but not least, Tabby – Mildred’s hopeless cat.
Meet Mildred Hubble and her best friend Maud for the very first time!
Mildred’s always getting her spells wrong and after only two days she crashes her broomstick, dents her hat, and accidentally turns her arch-enemy Ethel Hallow into a pig. Fearsome form mistress Miss Hardbroom is not impressed. But when Mildred runs away she overhears a coven of witches planning to take over the school and is determined to stop them...
Mildred makes a new friend!
Mildred is given the responsible task of looking-after new girl Enid Nightshade who’s quite a handful. Enid ropes Mildred into all sorts of pranks and nearly gets her expelled, but when nasty Ethel Hallow locks them in the store cupboard, they hatch a clever plan to escape by broomstick. Miraculously they manage to impress headmistress Miss Cackle with their display and by the end, Mildred, best-pal Maud and new-girl Enid are friends forever.
In which Mildred rescues magician Algernon Rowan-Webb from a life of frogdom!
Mildred returns for a second year at Miss Cackle’s Academy determined to lose her embarrassing reputation as the worst witch in the school. But Mildred gets turned into a frog by nasty Ethel and ends up in the lily pond. Here she meets another frog, a magician once called Algernon Rowan-Webb. Promising to turn him back into a magician again, Mildred seeks the help of her friends, but things rapidly get out of hand!
Mildred gets into all sorts of trouble on the school trip!
Mr Rowan-Webb, whom Mildred saved from the lily pond, has invited all the second years to spend a week’s holiday at his castle at Grim Cove, but Mildred’s not allowed to bring Tabby. Unable to bear the thought of a week with her beloved cat, Mildred manages to hide him in the boat, but Ethel knows she’s up to something.
Mildred has her doubts about Miss Granite…
Mildred is now in Year Three. Mildred's class has a new form teacher – no more Miss Hardbroom for Mildred and her friends! But their new form teacher is acting really weird. Investigating isn’t easy, especially when Mildred’s potions go wrong and class know-it-all Ethel insists on being ‘helpful’, and her cat Tabby is having a nervous breakdown and refuses to fly!
Mildred invents an animal speaking spell!
Mildred is still the worst witch at Miss Cackle’s, but she’s done the best holiday project ever and she’s sure that the fearsome Miss Hardbroom will be impressed. Even her arch-enemy Ethel Hallow is being suspiciously friendly, that is until Mildred realizes that Ethel has stolen her animal-speaking spell and landed Mildred in big trouble with Miss Hardbroom – again!
Mildred makes friends with an amazing performing puppy!
Mildred makes a wish on a shooting star – and to her great surprise, it comes true! Mildred's wish-come-true is a small dog but how can she keep him a secret from all the others, especially the formidable Miss Hardbroom? It's a disaster waiting to happen…and it does! But everything turns out for the best when Mildred and her clever dog, Star, win an indoor swimming pool for the school!
Mildred wants to be Head Girl!
Summer term has started at Miss Cackle's Academy, and somehow accident-prone Mildred has made it to Year Four without being expelled.
