This picture book is full of beautiful, pastel illustrations which are quirkily and cleverly detailed, together with fun play on words [tail and tale] and an endearing main character... [A] great stimulus for discussion as well as memory and sequencing activities, but most of all it's fun!

Looking at friendship in a different way is the delightful Churchill’s Tale of Tails by Anca Sandu. When Churchill the pig loses his tail, his friends rally round and find him alternative tails to try. Churchill enjoys trying different tails so much that he neglects his friends until his tail is returned. Humour abounds in the variety of tails tried and Churchill’s wonderful changing expressions.

This funny and touching tale of the value of friendship is accompanied by entertaining, comical illustrations

Sandu has created a gorgeously funny fable which also explores kindness, empathy and the great feeling that comes from generosity… Sandu’s illustrations are a great deal of fun, with some very clever compositions (look out for the mirror, and the elephant), and a spread which has the same WOW factor as that one by Nadia Shireen last year (but this time with a peacock rather than a wolf). The pig’s expressions, with just tiny adjustments to his ears and eyes, are superb – even in his most narcissistic moment you can’t help feeling rather fond of Churchill.’

A quirky little story in which Anca Sandu delivers her moral with a pleasingly light touch.

It’s a lovely reminder of the importance of friendships, too, which is always a good life-lesson to reaffirm.

So Churchill tries on a whole host of other tails - tails that make his personality even more colourful. But along the way, Churchill forgets what really matters most to him - his friends.

Anca Sandu was born in Romania and currently lives in Portland, USA. She studied children's illustration at the prestigious Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge. She works as a freelance designer. This is her first picture book.
