In June 2020, award-winning British-Turkish novelist, Elif Shafak, joined writer, journalist and broadcaster Afua Hirsch to discuss inequality and what we can do to address and challenge it.

Topic: Inequality

The following activities give KS3-5 students the opportunity to discuss how and why the coronavirus pandemic has affected existing inequalities in society, how young people can address inequality, and whether our current education system and curriculum addresses inequality. The following activities can be used as standalone activities, or used together with the starter and plenary to form a complete lesson (approx. 1 hour 30 mins in total).

  1. Why has the pandemic had a bigger impact on certain groups of people?

  2. How can I challenge inequality?

  3. Does our education system address inequality?
