Legacy

One Family, a Cup of Tea and the Company that Took On the World

Legacy by Thomas Harding is a narrative history of the Salmon and Gluckstein family, whose journey from penniless immigrants to industrial success became intertwined with the rise of J. Lyons & Co. Drawing on his own family history, Harding uses five generations to explore how one family's changing fortunes reflected profound changes in modern Britain.
  • Topics: Immigration; family history; business and entrepreneurship; social and industrial change; Jewish life in Britain
  • Period: 1800s–1980s
  • Perspective: A family story told by a descendant

About the book
For more than a century, Lyons was part of everyday British life. Its restaurants and corner houses appeared on high streets, while its tea, coffee and other products found their way into homes across the country. Behind the company were a family whose ambitions, loyalties and setbacks shaped its extraordinary rise — and its eventual decline.

Their story unfolds against 175 years of transformation. Horse-drawn transport gave way to aeroplanes, frozen food and computers; women's roles changed dramatically; and successive generations of immigrants contributed to Britain's culture and economy. Lyons itself became an innovator, including through its pioneering move into computing with LEO.

Harding charts the tragedies, triumphs, loves and losses that bound the family together while examining how their business reached such heights, helped shape modern consumer culture and then collapsed within a matter of decades. The result connects the fortunes of one immigrant family and its company to the wider history of a country undergoing immense social, technological and economic change.

Books similar to Legacy
If you're looking for books similar to Legacy, these books also use family histories to illuminate much larger social and historical changes, while ranging from twentieth-century Germany to working-class Britain and nine centuries of Chinese history.
  • The House by the Lake by Thomas Harding: Like Legacy, Harding draws on his own family history, Jewish heritage and archival research to connect a private story with wider historical events. Rather than following a family dynasty and business through British history, The House by the Lake traces one house outside Berlin and the five families who lived there across twentieth-century Germany.
  • Ancestors by Frank Ching: Both books use the author's own family tree as a way into much larger political and social histories, however, Ching follows his ancestors across 900 years of Chinese history.
  • Common People by Alison Light: Both reconstruct family histories to explore the lives of earlier generations within a broader account of British social change. Light focuses on generations of ordinary working-class ancestors, while Legacy follows a family whose fortunes took them from poverty and immigration to entrepreneurship, wealth and influence on British consumer culture.

I was riveted: this is a fascinating social history.
