How do I apply?

As part of your application we'll ask you to tell us about your book. What's it called? What's it about? What makes it special?

We'll also ask you to send us up to 1,000 words – it could be the opening chapter, or a later section of your book which you’re particularly proud of. It's up to you.

In 250 words, we will also ask you to tell us how you meet our criteria.

Editors from across Penguin will assess your application, considering your writing talent and ability, as well as the originality of your story or idea.

Applications for WriteNow 2020 are now closed.

"‘I grew up thinking people like me didn’t belong in books or on the bookshelves. The WriteNow programme was the invitation I needed to believe that voices like mine matter."

Published author and WriteNow alumnus Rashmi Sirdeshpande

Important dates

  • WriteNow applications are now closed.
  • This year's workshop will take place virtually on Saturday 11 July. In the fortnight following, writers will have 1-1s with Penguin editors to get personalised feedback on their work.
  • Following these feedback calls, we will then shortlist a number of exceptional writers for the editorial programme. If you are shortlisted we'll ask you to send us a full manuscript - or everything you have written so far - by 30 August. We will also arrange a short phone call with all our shortlisted applicants to understand a little more about why WriteNow appealed to you and what you want to get out of the editorial programme.
  • We will then announce the final 10 writers before the end of October.
