Vintage has teamed up with the EFG London Jazz Festival to bring you the chance to win the new designed and illustrated edition of Murakami's Abandoning a Cat and a pair of tickets to see Haruki Murakami’s Jazz at Peter Cat: A Japanese Jazz Night at the Barbican at either 4:30PM or 8PM on 21st November 2026. Three runners-up will receive a copy of Abandoning a Cat.

Murakami's passion for jazz is not only reflected in his writing and extensive vinyl collection (rumoured to exceed 10,000 records); he also ran a jazz club in Tokyo from 1974 to 1981, which he named Peter Cat, after his pet.

Audiences will hear the jazz classics that formed Murakami's literary universe, reinterpreted by contemporary Japanese musicians, including Junko Onishi Trio, Sachi Hayasaka / TReS and Yoshio Suzuki's The Blend with Kosuke Mine, Keisuke Nakamura, Hakuei Kim, and Tamaya Honda.

With spoken word elements, a unique stage design, and specially commissioned visuals, the unique, never-before-seen project will be a highlight of the EFG London Jazz Festival 2026.

Every November, the EFG London Jazz Festival takes over the capital for ten days. It brings together world-renowned artists, emerging talent and ambitious new projects across London's venues big and small, celebrating jazz and experimental music.

The festival was created in 1992 by live music producers Serious. Serious is a leading producer of live jazz, international and new music through concerts, festivals, tours, digital shows, talent development schemes, learning and participation programmes, and bespoke events. Terms & Conditions:

  1. No purchase necessary to enter the prize draw.  
  2. This prize draw is open to UK residents aged 18 years or over, with the exception of employees of the Promoter, their families, agents and anyone else connected with this promotion.
  3. Entries must be received by 30 September. The Promoter accepts no responsibility for any entries that are incomplete, illegible, corrupted or fail to reach the Promoter by the relevant closing date for any reason. Proof of posting or sending is not proof of receipt. Automatically generated entries and entries via agents or third parties are invalid and will not be counted. Entries become the property of the Promoter and are not returned.
  4. Only one entry per person. No entrant may win more than one prize.

  6. All correctly completed entries will be entered into a prize draw which will take place on 1 October. The first entry drawn will be the winner. The subsequent three entries drawn will receive the runners-up prize.
  7. The prize for the winner is a copy of Abandoning a Cat by Haruki Murakami and a pair of tickets to see Haruki Murakami’s Jazz at Peter Cat: A Japanese Jazz Night at the Barbican on 21 November, either the performance starting at 4.30pm or the performance starting at 8pm). In the event that you cannot make these dates, no alternative dates will be possible and the Promoter reserves the right to offer the prize to a substitute winner.
  8. Other than those specified above, the promoter shall not be liable for any costs or expenses arising out of or in any way connected with this prize and does not accept any responsibility for any damage, loss or disappointment suffered by the winner as result of accepting this prize.
  9. Three runners-up will each receive a copy of Abandoning a Cat by Haruki Murakami.
  10. Prizes are subject to availability. In the event of unforeseen circumstances, the Promoter reserves the right (a) to substitute alternative prizes of equivalent or greater value and (b) in exceptional circumstances to amend or foreclose the promotion without notice. No correspondence will be entered into.
  11. The winner will be notified via email or post by 2 October. The winner must claim their prize within 14 working days of the Promoter sending notification. If the prize is unclaimed after this time, it will lapse and the Promoter reserves the right to offer the unclaimed prize to a substitute winner selected in accordance with these rules.
  12. By entering this competition, all entrants agree to the use of their personal data by the Promoter for the purposes of running the competition as detailed in these terms and conditions.  Details on how we process the personal data of entrants can be found in our Privacy Policy.
  13. Promoter may disqualify any entrant whose entry does not comply with these terms and conditions (in Promoter’s sole opinion) or who, in Promoter’s sole determination, has acted in a manner that is fraudulent, dishonest or unjust to other entrants including, without limitation, tampering with the operation of the prize draw, manipulating or rigging votes, hacking, deceiving, cheating or by harassing or threatening other entrants or a representative of Promoter. 
  14. By entering the prize draw each entrant agrees to be bound by these terms and conditions.
